While criss-crossing Le Plateau in Montréal earlier this month I came upon this architectural novelty. Santa Cruz Portuguese Church (Missao St. Cruz) is located at 60, Rue Rachel Ouest. Although I did not venture inside I would imagine the windows in the roof’s étagère-like design let in a lot of colourful light!

Square St-Louis, an oasis on the southern Plateau of Mont-Royal

This is the front lawn for historic residences which surround the park. Home to artisans – from musicians to painters to authors – on the right is a bust of Émile Nelligan, a tribute to one of the province’s most celebrated poets who lived on the square before tragically spending his last, less creative, years in an insane asylum.

Belvédère Kondiaronk – Montréal’s community balcony

The most prominent look-out in the Parc du Mont-Royal, the Kondiaronk Belvedere is a semicircular plaza with a chalet, overlooking the downtown but with views as far away as the eastern township mountains. Constructed in 1906, the look-out is named for the Huron chief Kondiaronk, who signed a major peace treaty with the French regime in 1701.

Farine Five Roses Flour

Better appreciated after dark this iconic sign switches back and forth, about every five seconds, from “Farine Five Roses” to “Five Roses Flour”. The mill stands alongside Montréal’s Lachine Canal, forerunner to the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Bonaventure Expressway not too far from the former Expo ’67 site. Other abandoned mills along the canal enjoy new life as condominiums.
